Optimization of an X-ray SASE-FEL

چکیده
The most important characteristics of an X-ray SASE-FEL are determined by the electron beam energy, transverse and longitudinal emittance, and by choice of the undulator period, field, and gap. Among them are the gain and saturation length, the amount and spectral characteristics of the spontaneous radiation, the wake fields due to the vacuum pipe. The spontaneous radiation intensity is very large in all X-ray SASE-FELs now being designed, and it contributes to the final electron beam energy spread, thus affecting the gain. It also produces a large background for the beam and radiation diagnostics instrumentation. The wake fields due to the resistivity and roughness of the beam pipe through the undulator, also affects the beam 6-dimensional phase space volume, and thus the gain and the line width. In this paper, we discuss ways to optimize the FEL when considering all these effects. In particular we consider and discuss the use of a hybrid iron-permanent magnet helical undulator to minimize some of these effects, and thus optimize the FEL design. r 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. Design formulas for short - wavelength FELs
Simple formulas for optimization of VUV and X-ray SASE FELs are presented. The FEL gain length and the optimal beta-function are explicitly expressed in terms of the electron beam and undulator parameters. The FEL saturation length is estimated taking into account quantum diffusion in the undulator. Examples of the FEL optimization are given. Parameters of a SASE FEL, operating at the Compton w...
متن کامل2 2 M ay 2 00 2 Scheme for Attophysics Experiments at a X - ray SASE FEL
We propose a concept for production of high power coherent attosecond pulses in X-ray range. An approach is based on generation of 8th harmonic of radiation in a multistage HGHG FEL (high gain high harmonic free electron laser) configuration starting from shot noise. Single-spike phenomena occurs when electron bunch is passed through the sequence of four relatively short undulators. The first s...
متن کاملEfficient frequency doubler for the soft X-ray SASE FEL at the TESLA Test Facility
This paper describes an effective frequency doubler scheme for SASE free electron lasers. It consists of an undulator tuned to the first harmonic, a dispersion section, and a tapered undulator tuned to the second harmonic. The first stage is a conventional soft X-ray SASE FEL. Its gain is controlled in such a way that the maximum energy modulation of the electron beam at the exit is about equal...
متن کاملSASE FEL Saturation Characterization at the ATF
After successful completion of the High Gain Harmonic Generation (HGHG) free electron laser (FEL) experiment [1,2] at the Accelerator Test Facility (ATF), R&D toward future light sources at the NSLS achieved another milestone on March 17, 2001 when the visible-infrared self-amplified spontaneous emission amplifier (VISA) experiment at the ATF achieved saturation. The VISA Self Amplified Spontan...
متن کاملSASE FEL Polarization Control Using Crossed Undulator∗
There is a growing interest in producing intense, coherent x-ray radiation with an adjustable and arbitrary polarization state. In this paper, we study the crossed undulator scheme for rapid polarization control in a self-amplified spontaneous emission (SASE) free electron laser (FEL). Because a SASE source is a temporally chaotic light, we perform a statistical analysis on the state of polariz...
